SISTER Ella Jennie WHITING

Highlights: Known as Jennie, Sister Whiting completed her nurse training at Sydney Hospital in 1914 and joined the Australian Army Nursing Service on 21 Aug 1915.

Jennie sailed to Cairo, Egypt where she joined 2 Australia General Hospital on 22 Sep 1915. On 8 Jun 1916 she was transferred to 3 Australian General Hospital, then located at Abbassia and a month later sailed for India where she worked at a Station Hospital before sailing to England, arriving 21 Feb 1917.

Jennie served at No 3 Australian Auxiliary Hospital (Dartford) until she was sent to 2 Australian General Hospital, Wimereux, France, arriving 8 Jan 1918. Later that year Jennie worked at 5 Casualty Clearing Station, as well as 23 and 57 Casualty Clearing Stations for short periods before returning to Australia on 6 May 1919 as nursing staff on the troop ship Kaiser I Hind.

She was discharged on 11 Aug 1919. Jennie married Joseph Cuthbert Kershaw in Sydney in 1929 but was widowed 6 years later, she died in 1968.
